Topic: Missing Tauranga Artworks
Recently Tauranga resident Nyree Sherlock sent me an email asking if I could help find some missing murals that were funded by Tauranga City Council.
Tauranga’s Baycourt Theatre - unfortunately no photos of the murals are available.
We are wondering if anyone could help cast any light on the whereabouts of the missing artworks belonging to the people of Tauranga.
Here is Nyree’s email:Hi Pete, Cushla Lewis, currently working for TV3, and I painted some free standing murals around Baycourt in the early 1980’s - the Director of Baycourt then was a guy named Craig Pollack. They were there for many years and were an early form of public art.It would be interesting to find out what happened to them as they were paid for by council funding. The surface of the murals were well protected due to graffiti proofing. The murals depicted the type of performance arts that the newly built Baycourt would be used for.I have asked quite a few people and no one seems to know the answer.Sometimes things just disappear without explanation in Tauranga, and I just wonder whether they were dumped somewhere; whether they still exist in some storage room facility; or could someone be looking after them in the meantime?Cushla and I are interested in finding out what happened to these murals. We are not precious about them, nor anxious, just curious to know where they ended up.That is why I wondered whether an enquiry could be made through your SunLive art blog and readers could give us helpful feedback by way of the Sunlive comment’s column. Thanks,Nyree Sherlock.
If anyone can help Nyree and Cushla locate the murals or knows what became of them please let us know.
Your help would be most appreciated.
Unfortunately no photos of the murals are available so as a ’longshot request’ any existing copies of these would be helpful.
