Nigel Roderick Brown was born in Invercargill in 1949 to Raymond Francis and Veronica Brown (nee Sedon). He grew up in Tauranga, attending Otumoetai and Pillans Point Primary Schools. The now Southland based artist's paintings and prints give voice to his vision of a New Zealand identity. His first ever exhibition was held at Tauranga Public Library in 1963. His painting, The Tauranga Quartet, comprises four sections: Kaimai, Bethlehem, Judea and Gate Pa. Photograph: Tauranga Art Gallery (reproduced here with permission).
