Cover of the bilingual children's narrative non-fiction book Motiti Blue and the Oil Spill: A Story from the Rena Disaster by Debbie McCauley. Cover design by Sarah Elworthy using the painting Little Blue Penguin by Elliot Mason. Elliot's artwork was created shortly after the Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef (Ōtāiti). Portrayed is a little blue penguin looking out to sea, about to embark on a fishing voyage in the contaminated water. The patterns on the rocks reference marine rock life with various species simplified into patterns representing the creatures of the area. Elliot was part of a Department of Conservation cleanup team catching oiled little blue penguins from Mauāo and Mōtītī Island. He created several artworks that reflect on his experience with the oiled little blue penguins.
