Barnabas Turner was a regimental heavyweight boxer. He was gassed in World War I which affected him for the rest of his life. He was my husband's great-grandfather - Debbie McCauley.
Barnabas Turner was born in Rooks Lane, Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, on 4 May 1880. His parents were Oliver and Elizabeth Turner (nee Shipp).
On 4 September 1902 Barnabas married Sarah Ann Pounder at Drypool Parish Church, Sculcoates, Hull, England. Sarah was born at Nelson, Lancashire on 8 March 1879.
At the time of their marriage Barnabas lived at Ferries Street, Sculcoates, Hull, and was employed as a fireman (probably in the docks area). Sarah was residing at 1 Stanley Terrace, Sculcoates, Hull and was employed as a leather machinist.
Barnabas and Sarah had two children:
- Oliver Wilson Turner (1903-1964)
- William Arthur Turner (1905-1980)
From 1904 to 1906 Barnabas was employed on the Alexandria Docks and Railway Extension at Gateshead, and from 1908 to 1915 as a gas engine and steam crane driver at Hull Docks.
The couple resided at 94 Crowle Street, Hull in the 1920’s and Barnabas was employed by his father-in-law, Wilson Pounder, as being in charge of transport in the firm of Wilson Pounder Transport and Carting Agents, Crowle Street, Hull. Barnabas left the firm in the early 1930’s.
Barnabas served in the Army during the World War I as Sapper 308205 with The Royal Engineers. He later transferred to The East Yorkshire Regiment as Sapper 4601 and then to The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry as Sapper 44690. Finally he returned to The Royal Engineers as Sapper 264818. He was a steam crane driver at RE Docks – Troops, Dunkirk.
He was a regimental heavyweight boxer. During World War I he was gassed, which afftected him for the rest of his life. He would take comfort when ill from sitting in the corner of his living room next to the fireplace.
Sarah died in Hull in early 1941. Barnabas died, aged 81, at their home at 10 Portobello Street, on 13 January 1962.
