Corporal Donald Duncan Bain was aged 34 when he was killed in action during World War II in Italy on 15 December 1943. He is remembered on the Anzac War Memorial Cenotaph at Mount Maunganui.
Donald Duncan Bain was born in Mosgiel, Dunedin on 20 June 1909 (reg. 1922/11075). His parents were Duncan and of Margaret Bain (nee Matheson) who married in Dunedin on 15 February 1922.
Donald worked as a leather presser. He married Isabella Waldie Whitson in 1940 (folio: 1940/13408).
Donald served with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War II, rising to the rank of Corporal with the 23 Infantry Battalion.
He was aged 34 when he was killed in action in Italy on 15 December 1943 (reg. 1945/52851).
Donald is remembered on the Anzac War Memorial Cenotaph at Mount Maunganui. It is not yet known what Donald's connection to Tauranga is, but it may be through his mother. Another possibility is through a well known Mount Maunganui local called David Bain. He was a shop owner and Mount town clerk for many years. There are people still alive who remember him well. Perhaps Duncan Bain was the nephew of David Bain.
