Ernest Menzies Beagrie was a boy immigrant to New Zealand in 1914 when there was a shortage of farm boys. He joined up for World War I from Katikati and was wounded twice.

Ernest Menzies Beagrie was born in Scotland on 4 October 1894.

He was nineteen years old when he arrived in New Zealand as a farm boy. 

Like many of the farm boys, he joined up for World War I. He enlisted from Katikati in 1916. His employer at the time was a Mr Walsh of Katikati.

On 15 April 1922 he married Violet May Henry (reg. 1922/2797). Violet's parents were Katikati settlers Thomas and Martha Henry (nee Boyd) who arrived in New Zealand on 25 May 1884. Ernest and Violet had four children together:

  1. Joan Beagrie (1922-1922). Born in 1922, but died at one day of age (reg. 1922/5800). Buried with her maternal grandparents in Katikati Cemetery.
  2. Ernest Menzies Beagrie (1923-1991). Born on 4 August 1923. He died in 1991 (reg. 1991/31249).
  3. Ethel Violet Beagrie (1925-1994). Born in Matamata on 29 April 1925. Ethel died in Te Puke on 9 September 1994.
  4. George Beagrie (1930-1930). Born in 1930, but died when six hours old (reg. 1930/2887).

Ernest died in Matamata, aged 40, on 10 October 1935 (reg. 1935/22226). He was buried in Matamata Cemetery. Violet died in 1961 and was also buried in Matamata Cemetery.
