Former Tauranga District High School student Lawrence Edgecombe Maxfield was killed in action in the Western Desert in 1941.

Lawrence Edgecumbe Maxfield (1911-1941)Lawrence Edgecombe Maxfield was born on 8 September 1911 (reg. 1911/18967), the son of Herbert William and Mary Agnes Maxfield (nee Harris) who married in 1909 (reg. 1909/4698). He attended Tauranga District High School, gaining his 5th Standard Certificate.

When he left school he worked as a labourer prior to enlisting in World War II.

He embarked for Egypt on 7 April 1941, joining the Mechanical Transport Company as a driver.

He was killed in action in the Western Desert on 23 November 1941 (reg. 1945/13357).

Lawrence is remembered in Tauranga's Memorial Grove, two rows of totara trees located on Fifteenth Avenue which stand as a memorial to 41 former Tauranga District High School students killed during World War II (1939-1945).
