Lionel Roberts Wilkinson (1887-1976) was mayor of Tauranga from 16 May 1935 to 22 November 1950. He had served during World War I, but was discharged 'on account of wounds received in action'.
Lionel Roberts Wilkinson was born in Yorkshire, England, on 20 May 1887 to William Roberts and Frances Sarah Wilkinson (nee Robinson) who married in Ponetefract, Yorkshire, England, in December 1883. He was baptised on 3 July 1887 at St Michael and All Holy Angels, Carleton, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, england.
On 9 October 1915 Lionel embarked from Wellington for Suez, Egypt to serve during World War I. He had enlisted at Mangapiko in Nelson and was with the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade (A Company). He saw action in Egypt (1915-1916) and France (1916).
Lionel was discharged on 11 January 1917 'on account of wounds received in action'.
He married Clementina Margaret Alexander in 1916 (reg. 1916/2513). Clementina was born in Te Awamutu in July 1896 (reg. 1896/4414) to Charles Monrath and Flora Elizabeth Alexander.
The 1928 Electoral Roll shows Lionel and Clementina living in Cambridge Road, Tauranga.
Lionel was mayor of Tauranga from 16 May 1935 to 22 November 1950.
Clementina died in Auckland at age 63 on 9 November 1958 (reg. 1958/30179). She was cremated at Purewa Cemetery on 12 November 1958.
Lionel died at age 89, on 4 November 1976 (reg. 1977/30880). He was cremated in Rotorua on 7 December 1976.
