White cross for Tukapa Toi Makaraure (1901-1918).


Tukapa Toi Makaraure was only 16 years old when he enlisted to serve during World War I. While in France he became ill with bronchial pneumonia during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Tukapa died in the 8th Canadian Stationary Hospital at Dunkirk in Nord, France on 30 December 1918. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
