Robert McConnell had farmed at Ohauiti and Katikati before joining up for World War I. He was killed in action in Belgium on 19 June 1917, aged 28. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
