Tauranga born wood machinist John James Grant enlisted to serve during World War I with the Australian Imperial Force and saw action in Gallipoli. He transferred to the Camel Corps in 1916 and was killed in action at El Ferdan, Mageibra on 6 August 1916 during the Battle of Romani, the last ground attack on the Suez Canal. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
