White cross for Hugh McInnes Hardy (1888-1918).


Storekeeper Hugh McInnes Hardy was a victim of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic (Spanish 'flu). He died from influenza at sea on 5 September 1918 en route from New Zealand to fight during World War I. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
