Tauranga surveyors assistant Alfred William Kent was killed in action during the Battle of Chunuk Bair at Gallipoli on 8 August 1915. He was a trooper with the Auckland Mounted Rifles. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
