White cross for Charles Joass (1886-1916).


Charles Joass worked as a fisherman for Sanford Ltd in Tauranga. He enlisted during World War I and was reported missing in action at the Somme in Northern France on 27 September 1916. A Court of Enquiry found that he had been killed in action.In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
