White cross for Charlie Wood Rakauhemo (1893-1917) .


24-year-old Tauranga farmer Charlie Wood Rakauhemo was killed in action at Ypres in Belgium on 8 July 1917. He was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
