Tauranga labourer James Frew served during World War I under the assumed name 'James Henry Francis'. He was killed in action at Ypres in France on 26 July 1917. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
