Alexander Law Bell (1897-1918) .

Alexander Law Bell was born in Feilding on 22 July 1897 (reg. 1897/8817) to Edward and Mary Bell (nee Watt). Alexander enlisted at Taupiri for World War I (1914-1918) on 14 May 1917. Like many of his peers, he 'misrepresented' his age on his enlistment papers, giving 22 July 1894 as his birth date and therefore bumping his age up to 22, rather than the 19 that he actually was. His older brother John Edward Bell was killed in Belgium on 17 June 1917. At age 21 Alexander was wounded on the battlefield in France, most likely during The Battle of Amiens. He died from his wounds in the field at the Advanced Dressing Station of No. 3 N.Z. Field Ambulance on 9 August 1918 (reg. 1918/85611). He was buried at Couin New British Cemetery in Pas-de-Calais, France (Row G, Grave 10). Text by Debbie McCauley. Photograph: Family archives.
