Headstone of Patrick Falcon Leonard (1833-1864).


Patrick Falcon Leonard was born at Dunnichen in Angus, Scotland, on 2 June 1833. His parents were Peter and Ann Cargill Leonard (nee Roger) who married on 1 February 1830 at Arbroath in Scotland. It is not known when Patrick arrived in New Zealand, but assumed to be 1863 with the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot ('Paddy's Blackguards') - 2nd BattalionLieutenant Patrick Leonard of the 18th Regiment died of dysentery in Tauranga on 4 August 1864. He was buried in Tauranga Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His headstone and ground plaque read; Sacred to the Memory of Patrick Falcon Leonard Esq, Late Lieutenant 2nd Batt., Royal Irish Regt, who died at Tauranga on the 1st August 1864, Universally regretted by his brother officersText and photograph by Debbie McCauley (22 November 2016).

Note: Alternative name 'Falcon Peter Leonard'. Also, date on headstone reading 1 August 1864 is incorrect.
