Headstone of Ruawahine, John and John Lees Faulkner.


Ruawahine Irihapeti (Elizabeth) Faulkner was the wife of early Tauranga trader John Lees Faulkner. She belonged to the Ngāi Te Rangi iwi, the last people to occupy the Otūmoetai Ruawahine and John had 13 children together before she died on 24 September 1855 and was buried in Tauranga Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). The couple's thirteen-year-old son, John Faulkner, died on 9 February 1857. He was buried with his mother Ruawahine. The service was conducted by Archdeacon Alfred Nesbit Brown. John Lees Faulkner died in Tauranga, aged 71, on 8 September 1882 (reg. 1882/5627) at his son John Daniel’s home on Cameron Road [The Yorkshire Grey Hotel on the corner of Cameron Road and Sixth Avenue in the then suburb of Quarter Acres]. His obituary appeared in the Bay of Plenty Times on 9 September 1882. John was buried with Ruawahine and their son John. The headstone reads: 'In Memory of Elizabeth Faulkner, Died Sept 24th 1855, Aged 44 years; Also of John Faulkner who died Feb 9th 1857, Aged 13 years. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Also John Lees Faulkner, Born 1811, Died 1882, Husband and father of above. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (22 November 2016).
