Headstone of George Mitchelson (c1828-1866).


George Mitchelson was born in c1828. He enlisted on 17 May 1862, becoming a Private in the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot (Regimental Number: 841) and likely served during the New Zealand Wars. George was aged 38 when he died in Tauranga. He was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His ground plaque reads: Sacred to the memory of G. Mitchelson, D. Coy., 1st Batt., 12 Reg. Died at Te Papa 8th May 1866 aged 38 years. A previous part of the inscription read: Erected by the N.C.O.s & men, as a token of respect. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (1 October 2016).
