Headstone of Robert Collins (1823-1869).


Robert Collins was born in February 1823 in Buttevant, Cork, Ireland. His parents were Michael and Judith Collins. Robert attested for the 57th Regiment on 27 July 1838, serving in Malta and Istanbul, Turkey. On 11 July 1847 he married Mary Gilligan in Booterstown, Dublin, Ireland. He served in Corfu, the Crimea and India. He left India in November 1860, arriving in New Zealand in January 1861, being sent to Taranaki the following month. Robert was with the 57th Regiment, serving during the New Zealand Wars until he was discharged on 30 November 1863. The following year, in January 1864, he moved to Tauranga. Robert died in Tauranga on 13 November 1869, aged 43. He was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). Robert has both a headstone and a ground plaque which reads: In memory of Captain Robert Collins, Quartermaster of the Taranaki Militia, born at Buttevant Co. Cork Ireland, died at Te Papa on the 13th November 1869 aged 43 years. His obituary appeared in the Taranaki Herald on 24 November 1869. Robert is also remembered on his wife's headstone at Te Henui Cemetery in New Plymouth. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (1 October 2016).
