Headstone of Henry Emus (1836-1867).

Henry Emus was born at Preston in Lancashire, England in 1836. His parents were John and Alice Emus (nee Livesey) who married on 8 November 1833 at St John in Preston. John was a widow, his first wife Mary (nee Broadley) had died in 1830.

Sergeant-Major Henry Emus fought Māori during the Tauranga Bush Campaign of 1867. On 17 January 1867 troops were ordered out under Colonel Philip Harington who was in command of the 1st Waikato Militia. They occupied Omanawa Redoubt. Captain Henry Goldsmith was left in charge at Omanawa with orders from Colonel Theodore Minet Haultain not to cross the Wairoa RiverOn 18 January 1867 Goldsmith reported that he found a burned out whare whilst patrolling along the Wairoa River with 40 men. They crossed the Wairoa to its west bank and were fired upon by Māori near the village of Te Irihanga. Sergeant-Major Henry Emus was shot through the shoulder and mortally wounded. For about three quarters of an hour shots were exchanged and it's likely that two Māori were wounded or killed. As a result of the exchange, Harington arrested Goldsmith for leaving his post and engaging with the enemy without instruction. Henry died of his wounds five days later, on 23 January 1867. He was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā), his grave marked by a ground plaque. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (1 October 2016). Tauranga City Libraries Image Number: 16-241.

Note: Henry's ground plaque incorrectly states his date of death as 29 January 1867. His death certificate incorrectly spells his last name Emms.
