Tauranga 43rd Regiment New Zealand Wars memorial (1865)

This obelisk commemorates the 26 men of the 43rd Regiment who were killed in action or died of wounds received during the battles of Gate Pā (Pukehinahina) and Te Ranga. Their names are inscribed on marble plaques. Unlike other memorials this was erected 'within a year of the battles’ (Maclean & Phillips, 1990, p. 19). To the right in the background can be seen the grave of Captain John Hamilton.
