Private John Tims was aged 27 when he was killed during the Battle of Te Ranga.

John Tims (c1837-1864) was a private in the 68th Regiment. He had served for nine years and was 27 year old when he was killed via a gunshot wound to the chest (Southern Cross, 29 Jun 1864, p. 3).

A memorial at Mission Cemetery in Tauranga recorded: Sacred to the memory of Pte. J. Tims 68th. Lt. Infy. who was killed in action at Te Ranga on 21 June 1864 aged 26 Years. A man greatly esteemed and deeply regretted by his comrades who have erected this tablet (Well Done The 68th - via the diary of Charles Shuttleworth). The memorial no longer exists.
