Topic: 1864-2014: Battle of Gate Pā Sesquicentennial

Topic type:

In 2014 Tauranga commemorated 150 years since the Battles of Gate Pā (29 April 1864) and Te Ranga (21 June 1864). This page is an index to those events and the essays, articles, poetry, haka, speeches, artwork and the exhibition created to commemorate this pivotal event in Tauranga's rich history.

Battle of Gate Pa commemoration logoTwo entities were created in order to organise the commemoration of the Battle of Gate Pā's Sesquicentennial (150 years). They are the Pukehinahina Charitable Trust and the Battle of Gate Pa Charitable Trust.

The vision statement is as follows:

  • To commemorate the actions of our tipuna and forbears who fought and died at the Battle of Pukehinahina/Gate Pa and in the wars for Tauranga.
  • To foster a greater understanding of the nature of the conflict, including its effect on people's lives then, and for us today.
  • To honour the sacrifices of those who fought and gave their lives at Pukehinahina/Gate Pa, Te Ranga and the Bush campaign.
