Lieutenant Charles John Langlands was aged 21 when he was killed during the Battle of Gate Pā at Pukehinahina on 29 April 1864.

Charles John Langlands was born in c1843 to John Charles and Mary Langlands. Brass plaques to the Langlands can be found at the Old Bewick Holy Trinity:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN CHARLES LANGLANDS. BORN AT NEWCASTLE ON THE 27TH DAY OF MARCH 1800. BECAME TENANT OF OLD BEWICK - MAY 1823 FELL ASLEEP ON THE 11TH DAY OF MARCH 1874 "LORD I HAVE LOVED THE HABITATION OF THINE HOUSE AND THE PLACE WHERE THINE HONOUR DWELLETH" - PSALMS XXVI.8.

THE CHANCEL AND ROSE WINDOWS, ARE DEDICATED TO THE GLORY OF GOD, AND IN MEMORY OF MARY, WIFE OF J.C. LANGLANDS, WHO DIED AUG: 30 1852 - AGED 47. AND OF THEIR SON, CHARLES JOHN LANGLANDS, ENSIGN 43RD LIGHT INFANTRY, KILLED IN ACTION, AT THE ASSAULT OF THE GATE PAH, TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND APRIL 29 1864 - AGED 21.

Charles was aged 21 when a gunshot wound to the chest killed him during the Gate Pā at Pukehinahina on 29 April 1864. 

From The Gentleman's Magazine: Ensign Charles John Langlands, 43rd Light Infantry, eldest son of J. C. Langlands, esq., of Old Bewick, Northumberland. He volunteered for the assault as Colonel Booth's Orderly Officer.

The Daily Southern Cross reported on 3 May 1864:

Lieutenant Charles John Langlands became an ensign in the 43rd Regiment on the 19th May, 1861; and had, therefore, been hardly three years in the army. He was one of the officers who were found lying dead inside the pa, and he met his death like the other gallant men whose names are recorded as having fallen in this truly unfortunate engagement.
