Henry Matthews was a private. He enlisted in Melbourne and served with the 1st Waikato. Henry died on 6 September 1866 whilst attempting to extract powder from an unexploded 110 lb artillery shell found near Gate Pa. 'MATTHEWS Henry Matthews of 1st Waikato’s was killed on 6th September by the explosion of a shell which he was trying to open. The shell had been fired at Gate Pa two years ago' [Southern Cross, 1 Oct 1866]. Henry was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā) where a ground plaque marks his resting place.
