As part of the 150th commemoration of the Battle of Gate Pā (29 April 1864) the bronze plaque on the Gate Pā Memorial was restored by Ray McKenzie from BOP Memorials. Photos by Ray McKenzie.

The memorial was originally erected by the Tauranga Historical Society fifty years ago at the battle site during the Battle of Gate Pā Centennial in 1964. It was unveiled by the Chief Justice, the Re. Hon. Sir Harold Barrowclough on Tuesday, 28 April 1964, the eve of the commemoration. The memorial was dedicated by the Rev Brown Turei.
