S33: Mural by Tauriko School

The inspiration for our mural came from the artwork of Nigel Brown (b. 1949), an artist and printmaker who lives in coastal Southland but grew up in Tauranga.

His work is mainly about the history of New Zealand and the Maori people. He describes his styles as “expressive realism” with themes of abstraction, symbolism and expressionism. Lots of browns and black is used in his art and words are sometimes incorporated into the borders.

In preparation for our mural, we gathered library books about his art and read about his style and colour palette. We read about the Battle of Gate Pa and decided to base our mural around the tenet “If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, if his is thirsty, give him water to drink.” Our Maori warrior gives the English soldier water – something positive out of a sorry event.
