Gate Pa by Aniwaniwa from Kopukairoa, Arataki Primary School was part of an entry by Room 10 into the 150th Battle of Gate Pā Poetry Poster Competition (2014).

Maaori and British fighting against each other.

Row by row, guns and muskets firing mo te whenua,

That wasn’t what wanted Maaori.

Maaori wanted to be rangatira of their own land.

They didn’t want British to rule their land.

So they went to war.

The British ambushed Maaori.

The Maaori plan was better.

They jumped out of their hiding place and “bang,”

went their musket and taiaha.

I toa nga Maaori te pakanga o Pukehinahina!
