Topic: Battle of Gate Pā Poetry Poster Competition

Topic type:

As a class, students and children at both secondary and primary schools have the opportunity to research the background, actions and consequences of the Battle of Gate Pā and write poems using their English and Māori language skills. These poems can then be displayed in a decorative poster and entered into this competition.

Only one entry per class. Last date for entries: Thursday 1 April 2014.

  1. Students write poems. Each child in the class writes a poem in Māori or English or both on an A4 size sheet of paper base on the title: What does the Battle of Gate Pā mean to me? Children entering this competition can write about any aspect of the Battle of Gate Pā.
  2. Create a large poster. The children then paste their poems (you might choose the best ones only) on to a larger piece of paper (or any other material) and draw a large picture showing a scene of the Battle of Gate Pā as a background to the poems. The poems and the drawing should complement each other.
  3. Displaying the posters. The posters may be displayed in the St. George's Church Hall alongside the Battles of Gate Pā/Te Ranga Art Competition entries or at the Tauranga City Library during the commemorations. Be sure to write details of your school and class along with your contact details on the back. Drop your creation off at the Tauranga City Library's children and teenagers desk or to Victoria at the Greerton Mainstreet Office. Poetry posters may also appear on this kete.
  4. Prizes. If your class wins a prize, please obtain permission from the children's parents or caregivers for a photograph of your class receiving the prize in order that it may be used by the media.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Years 1 & 2 - $50 class prize
  • Years 3 & 4 - $50 class prize
  • Years 5 & 6 - $50 class prize
  • Years 7 & 8 - $50 class prize
