Topic: Battle relics displayed at Tauranga Library

Topic type:

Relics of the Battle of Gate Pa, historical books and paintings are now included in a special display at Tauranga Public Library. This article appeared in the Bay of Plenty Times on Tuesday, 28 April 1964, and is reproduced here with their permission.

Included in the display is the Victoria Cross won by Samuel Mitchell at Gate Pa, Mitchell's service record and an illuminated cabinet containing colour slides of the VC and other decorations won by Surgeon General W. G. N. Manley.

Also on display are the sword and medals of Captain T. C. Hamilton of HMS Esk who was killed during the assault on the pa. The display is on loan from the Hamilton City Council.

"Most of the items were lent by individuals, most of whom were related to men who fought at Gate Pa," said the Tauranga librarian, Mr J. M. Daley.

"More items are being brought in every day," he said.

Two items which were to be removed from display were short decorative swords which were thought to date from the Maori wars.

"We have since found out they originally were used as props in the Chinese theatre," said Mr Daley.

The display also includes paintings of scenes after the battle by Major General H. G. Robley.

The exhibition probably will close at the end of this week.
