The main function during the commemoration of the battle of Gate Pa will be on the afternoon of April 29 when a memorial at the battle site will be unveiled by the Chief Justice, Sir Harold Barrowclough. This article appeared in the Bay of Plenty Times on Monday, 27 April 1964, and is reproduced here with their permission.

The memorial will be dedicated by the Right Rev. Wiremu Panapa, Bishop of Aotearoa.

On the morning of May 3 a special commemorative service will be held at the Church of St Mary Immaculate and in the afternoon there will be a combined service at the Mission Cemetery when a new memorial to navy personnel who died in the battle will be dedicated.

Mr Pei Te Hirinui Jones will unveil a special cairn at the Te Ranga battle site on the afternoon of April 30.

Other functions are a centenary ball on May 1, Maori concert on May 2 and a play, "The Oval Table" from April 28-30.
