The Tauranga peninsula as far as Gate Pa was purchased by the Rev A. N. Brown, Archdeacon of Tauranga, on behalf of the Church Missionary Society in an effort to keep out undesirable elements who would have taken advantage of the Maoris.

The Maoris so respected Mr Brown that they chose a battle site outside the mission grounds.
