Commemorative Events

 

WEDNESDAY 29TH APRIL

10 a.m. Holy Communion will be celebrated at the Church of St. George, on the Battle Site.

Unveiling and dedication of a memorial at the Gate Pa Battle Site, at 2 p.m. A parade will assemble at 1 p.m. at the Tauranga Girls' College, to march to the Battle Site.

Speaker: Sir Harold Barrowclough.

Dedication by Rt. Rev. W. N. Panapa, Bishop of Aotearoa.

Prayers: Rev, Fr. Ryan, and Rev. C. D. R. Stevens

 

TUESDAY 28TH WEDNESDAY 29TH THURSDAY 30TH APRIL

Presentation of a dramatic play in the Tauranga Town Hall.

Patrons are required to attend in formal dress or in period costume.

 

During Commemorative Week there will be an exhibition of relics at the Public Library, Willow Street. Included will be the Victoria Cross won in the Gate Pa Battle by Samuel Mitchell.

 

THURSDAY 30th APRIL AT TE RANGA BATTLE SITE

The National Historic Places Trust has erected a cairn to mark the site of the Battle of Te Ranga, and this will be unveiled at 3 p.m. on Thursday 30th April. Address and unveiling by Mr Pei Te Hurinui Jones.

 

SATURDAY 2nd MAY At Memorial Park 8 p.m.

THE NEW ZEALAND MAORI CONCERT CHAMPIONSHIPS.

 

FINAL COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES WILL BE HELD AS FOLLOWS.

SUNDAY 3rd MAY at ST MARY'S 10 a.m.

Preacher: The Most Rev. R. J. Delargey D.D.

at ST GEORGE'S CHURCH, GATE PA

Holy Communion Service at 11 a.m. At this service a plaque will be unveiled by the Rt Rev. W. N. Panapa, Bishop of Aotearoa in the porch-erected in tribute to Maori gallantry.

at THE MISSION CEMETERY, 2.30 p.m.

Preacher: The Rt. Rev. W. N. Panapa, Bishop of Aotearoa.

At the latter service, a memorial will be dedicated by the Naval Chaplain in Memory of Navy personnel who lost their lives in the Gate Pa Battle.

 

AT ALL FUNCTIONS A COMMEMORATIVE BOOKLET WILL BE ON SALE, AT 2/- OBTAINABLE ALSO FROM THE SECRETARY, T. R. C. MUIR, 1483 CAMERON RD, TAURANGA.

 

THE MISSION HOUSE

The famous Mission House, Mission Street, Tauranga, will be open for inspection daily during commemorative Week, at times as set out in the Commemorative Booklet.

 

BUS TOUR OF HISTORIC TAURANGA

A conducted tour by bus will depart from the Bus Stand in Grey Street at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Fare, 2/6. A guide from the Historical Society will point out places of interest.
