In 2014 Tauranga commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gate Pā which took place on 29 April 1864. Also commemorated was the Battle of Te Ranga which took place two months later, on 21 June 1864. Tauranga City Library window installation: 'Te Mamae Aroha o Pukehinahina' by Duane Moyle depicting the trenches of Gate Pa and the mural 'Cultural Encounters' by Karen Lawson based on colonialisation, Tauranga history and the Battles of Gate Pa and Te Ranga.
