Captain Robert Thomas Francis Hamilton was one of those killed during the Battle of Gate Pa on 29 April 1864. His cousin Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton (1822-1864) was also killed during the battle. Story researched and written by Debbie McCauley.

Robert Thomas Francis Hamilton was born in 1835 to Lieutenant George and Elizabeth Hamilton. He was christened at Rugeley, Stafford in England on 20 July 1835.

He married Mary Kate Bigge at Hawley, Hampshire in England on 25 July 1857. Their children include:

  1. Seymour Degilbert Scovell Hamilton (1860-?). Seymour was born on 1 June 1860. He was christened in Jubbulpore, Bengal, India on 3 July 1860.
  2. Amy Beatrice Hamilton (1861-?). Amy was born on 6 Nov 1861. she was christened at Dum Dum, Bengal, India on 15 December 1861.

Robert was part of the 43rd Monmouth (Monmouthshire) Light Infantry Regiment. 

He was killed via a gunshot wound to the head during the Battle of Gate Pa on 29 April 1864.

The Daily Southern Cross reported on 3 May 1864:

Captain Robert Thomas Francis Hamilton entered the army on the 23rd January, 1852, when he became ensign in the 43rd Regiment. He was a lieutenant on the 13th April, 1855, and captain on the 31st July, 1860. He served with the 97th Regiment in Bengal, in suppressing the mutiny in 1857 and 1858, and was present in the actions of Nusrutpore (as orderly officer to Colonel Ingram, and mentioned in despatches), Chanda, Ummeerpore, and Sultanpore; siege and capture of Lucknow and storming of the Kaisa Bagh; operations in Bundlecund in 1859, including the pursuit to, night attack and surprise of the rebels on the Kalee Nuddee, for which he received a medal and clasp.

Robert was buried at Mission Cemetery in Tauranga.
