Caption

On 29 April 2014, Tauranga commemorated 150 years since the Battle of Gate Pā at Pukehinahina with over 10,000 people in attendance. This photograph is of a group of warriors dressed in items similar to what would have been worn by Māori in 1864 and holding tūpara (double-barrelled guns) which were the favoured firearm of Tauranga Māori at the time. The warrior group is moving towards Cameron Road in order to issue a challenge and greeting to Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, the Māori King Tuheitia Paki, Māori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Tim Keating and Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman. Following the welcome more than 600 Māori performed a haka written specially for the occasion. Photograph ©Tania Lewis-Rickard, reproduced here with her permission.
